David Hockney
13/06/2026
David Hockney, one of the most influential artists of the contemporary era, has died at 88. (1937 - 2026)

I was saddened to learn of the death of David Hockney.
I have always admired the thinking as well as the artistry of David Hockney. I would love to experiment with painting and still continue to try but as a photographer my hands and brushes do not seem to seek a familiarity as do my hands and eyes using a camera. However, it doesn't stop there as like Hockney I am always wanting to experiment. Recently, I have taken to look extensively into my images and experiment with them using various digital software. I personally find them pleasing and get a lot of artistic pleasure from creating them.
Martin Gayford's book on Hockney 'Spring Cannot Be Cancelled' is one of my favourite art books, featuring his art in Normandy and I am hugely impressed with his images from the region I know so well.
David Hockney always had a love hate relationship with the camera and photography, although he has made some beautiful photographic images, he has also turned them into experimental works of art.
His following comments have inspired me to continue with experimental photographic artistry:
'I'm interested in all kinds of pictures, however they are made, with cameras, with paint brushes, with computers, with anything’
'I was always interested in photography because it makes a picture'
